Quote:“Military service should rightly be reserved for those who believe in and are willing to die for what America stands for – and what America stands for is a belief in God as the source of our rights.”
I guess that means that god is coming around on the issue of gay marriage.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I have served my country, and anyone should be able to serve. The need for religion is moronic and small minded. I will say this is one of the bad things about US Military. In some units, I would never state that I was an atheist for fear of my military career.
Again, I no longer server, so I am good.
I can't even imagine the level of hypocrisy you had to endure. On the one hand, they definitely have no problem with putting you in mortal danger, but on the other hand, you can only patriotically serve your country if you believe in their imaginary friend.
Luke: You don't believe in the Force, do you?
Han Solo: Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen *anything* to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. 'Cause no mystical energy field controls *my* destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.

I think it is all about which service, and the ethos of the duty station. I was very open about my atheism, and my work spoke for itself. I was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade (O-2) in a slightly short period of time; I never experienced any sort of discrimination. But I am a very assertive person, so that may change things. My personality is very strong, and people probably sense that I will stand my ground.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
