Ashes of the Wake was a cool album. When was that, 2004 or so? I was in NY at the time and saw them touring for the album in the Nets arena, with slipknot or some such nonsense. In the meantime, Nu Metal died, and melodic Metalcore became insanely popular. A shittonne of awesome old bands reformed or put out new stuff. That's about the most important things that happened.

Not sure if this is if this is 2014, but Killswitch Engages new album isn't too shabby at all.

Technically 2013, but I'll let it count for being one of the best melodic metalcore albums lately
Oh, and how could I forget, Arch Enemy released the first album with the new shouteress, although I'm still partial to Angela.

And concerning female shouters, some local patriotism, Holy Moses also came out with something new, seriously old school...

Aw damn they got rid of Angela. That kinda blows. This chick is pretty damn good though.
Yeah, when I was sort of fading from the scene, metalcore and hardcore were getting big around Cleveland. Everything had to have a breakdown in it, which is funny because while that was getting popular, we were moving towards longer prog songs and away from breakdowns. The metalcore kids hated us. I remember playing our set while the next band's drummer sat off to the side of the stge tuning his snare the whole time. We kicked our singer out the day before, so I had to take over. I stopped in the middle of a song to tell their drummer to shut the fuck up- to mixed reaction from the audience. A fight broke out that I started and didnt join in haha It was pretty cool.
I couldn't tell you what's popular now as far as metal goes in Cleveland.
Oh and I kinda lied about my last metal album, I've kept up on everything Coheed and Cambria has put out, but I don't really classify them as metal.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."
For context, this is the previous verse:
"Hi Jesus" -robvalue

She is married to lead guitarist Michael Amott after all, and now manages the band. Rumors are that they are starting a family and can't both tour at the same time. Angela mentored AWG herself to become her successor. I adore Angela though, she's from around here, and she is really nice in person.

LOL. I don't hate metalcore like many TRVE Metalheads do. Alissa White-Gluz former band The Agonist are quite amazing for example.
I mostly weep for Alissa having left The Agonist because she is wasting her Chanson talents in AE, but her replacement is also very good (Album coming out next month)

Maybe not exactly metal. Prog rock?

Jesus! That chicks a fuckin badass.
Yeah, they're a mixed bag but prof rock probably fits them best. They do have some old school metal offerings that I really dig:
But compared to straight up metal, most of it stands in stark contrast. Like this:
God damn, I forgot how much I loved these guys. Also a great fucking video!

Unfortunately I can't view either of the vids here because of the fucking antediluvian licencing policy of the German music industry (may they be eaten last)
Edit:
found a BDM vid that I can watch. The drummer is quite the machine, eh?

Oh Balls. Well if you can find Coheed's Gunslingers and Gravemakers and The Black Dahlia Murder's What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse, give a listen if you haven't already.

So you like modern melodic death metal. What do you think of Soilwork's recent efforts?

Damn dude, you are bringing me back. I forgot all about Soilwork. I only listened to a few track, but my initial thought was that they were harder than I remember them being. Like they tipped the scale a little that way. Their vocal harmonies are still there and still top notch. Yeah I liked it. They are still just as solid and tight as before.
The only issue I ever had with Soilwork was how fucking crisp and clean they were. Not that that's a bad thing, especially since all metal is that way now, but I usually like to hear a touch of human imperfection. This offering does seem to have a little dirt on it. They're still just as precise, but I think they may have tuned a little lower or something.
