NY jury awards man named Ferrari $95K for impounded Ferrari

A county court justice ruled officers were right to seize the $110,000 vehicle and a 2012 forfeiture proceeding resulted in Ferrari surrendering the title of his Ferrari. County officials then auctioned off the car.

The ex-owner then sued in federal court. Three years later a judge ruled county officials went too far and a jury awarded the payout.

Good. Fuck 'em. Lousy thieves.

A scathing report released by a civil rights group today says the Golden State’s structure of spiraling court fees and fines — which tend to disproportionately affect poor Californians —  are “chillingly similar” to practices in Ferguson recently slammed by federal justice officials.

The report, by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in San Francisco, concludes that “a litany of practices and policies in California turn a citation offense into a poverty sentence.” The group found that more than 4 million Californians have lost their driver’s licenses because they failed to appear in court or pay a citation — some of which have nothing to do with driving at all.

If intruders break into my home I'll be more concerned with picking up the right gun (The one with the frangible rounds) so the bullets don't go through my neighbor's wall.

If you don't have a response to an "Intruder breaking into your home", you're already screwed.  The cops wont be there in time no matter how nice they are.

Oklahoma prosecutors seized assets from suspects to pay down their student debt and live rent-free

Law enforcement authorities argue that civil forfeiture is necessary to fight drug trafficking, and they have strenuously objected to a bill introduced by state Sen. Kyle Loveless (R-Oklahoma City) that would prohibit property forfeiture until suspects are convicted.

“The more I learn about it, the more upset and outraged I get that we’ve allowed this process to get to where it’s at,” Loveless said. “Your property is considered guilty until proven innocent. It is up to the individual to petition the government after they’ve seized it to prove that it is innocent. To me, that, on its face, is un-American.”

Happened to me in college, cop took my 10 speed stating I didn't have proof of ownership and he'd be taking it to impound. When I got proof of ownership the desk officer said, oops, sorry, the impound was robbed, nothing we can do.
