Brian, it still makes sense today for a large number of people in the world. I told you yesterday that not everyone lives in a democracy with human rights, not everyone knows facts about evolution, psychology, biology and general science. I can freely not believe without repercussions and find other ways to cope with pain, but some folks really need it. Wilful ignorance would be to shit on facts without any viable reason. I think the majority of theists are not wilfully ignorant, just unintentionally. Nurturing also plays a part, as well as circumstances.
If it's about gaps there's still many to fill. We know little about the universe compared to what we will know in another 100 years - And the cycle goes on. I mean, scientists and philosophers have done a great job, but we are still far from perfection and now we risk running out of resources in a century if we don't change.
Neil Tyson said that if you hate someone for believing in creationism if they don't know facts or are ignorant it's not only disrespectful but it's unfair. There's something in some people's brains that prevents them from not believing. How else are there elite scientists, far smarter and wiser than you and me that believe in a personal god?

There are a number of religions that can produce what you are speaking of, Buddhism (which is atheist) is one of them. Yoga with or without woo, seems to produce much of the same. So does meditation, with or without god. A number of artists, musicians, and deep thinking scientists seem to have it. Terry Pratchet appears to have had it. And while I've met Christians who are as you describe, I've not met many.
I get a sublime joy and connectedness when I'm at work in the Preserve, when I look out at the stars and know that as distant as they are, their ashes make up my body, when I'm at the beach and marvel at the fact that over millions or years the waves have incessantly risen and fallen and yet no two have ever been identical ... to my mind, inventing an artificial construct in order to arrive at joy bespeaks a mind incapable of perceiving the wonderment and beauty that we are immersed in.

Just the other day on FB someone posted a meme that describes religious tribalism quite aptly. It was a picture of a mountain lion atop a mountain looking down at the valley and the top words were "this is all mine", and something to the effect at the bottom "need to pee on all that to mark my territory".
Humans don't understand that religion is merely an anthropomorphic reflection of our group competition.

It's not that all christians are joyful, even though they should be, but the only people I've come across in my life that I would consider joyful have been christians. I see joy as different than happiness, in that it is a deeper contentment, and is there whether one's life is going well or not. It's present even in times of great sickness and dying. It's knowing that, no matter what happens, things are okay--not just that they will be okay, but they are okay.
Religious people are highly intolerant. I don't like any of them.

Wrong. Post hoc fallacy.

All of them? Everywhere? You don't like any of them?
Your generalizations are just as flawed as the OP's when he states that non-Christians do not experience joy.

Yes. All religious people. All. Including you. Just listen to your tone. You can't possibly let me be and think what I want to think. You have to come and tell me I'm wrong about thinking what I think.

Complex of persecution is a serious issue.

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive, myself. Each quality, logic and emotionalism, addresses different aspect of life. The well-balanced person uses the right tool for the job.
