A little bit about me

A little bit about me
Greetings and salutations

I am a former member of friendly atheist forums, which closed a while back so if you were on that forum you may remember me, if so hello again. I know that I recognise xpastor from there. I went to a Christian school in the UK, stopped believing in God when I was around 11 or 12 (I don't remember exactly when), got massively into anti-theism when I was a teenager which got me into Philosophy. I'm now about to finish my BA in Philosophy and am no longer an atheist, but accept instead the Aristotelian Prime mover argument for... well an Aristotelian prime mover. Not theistic at all, don't believe in a personal God at all, just believe that the first cause argument makes sense as well as making the rest of philosophy a whole lot easier. Politically I'm a libertarian conservative, very broadly in line with the Republican party (if they actually believed what they claimed to and weren't corrupt) except for their views on religion and Christianity, although some of their points of view that stem from Christian dogma, I accept for separate reasons (such as opposition to abortion). Also I'm no longer an anti-theist, although I do have sympathy for some anti-theist arguments and viewpoints (usually the ones that coincide with libertarianism).

Look forward to seeing you on the boards, if you have any questions about me, feel free to ask away either here or as a PM. I will do my utmost to be respectful if/when/where we disagree if you try to do the same.

RE: A little bit about me
I don't know if I have welcoming privileges yet (I just joined this forum two days ago), but I still want to say: welcome (:

In regards to your political opinions, do you think you can be both a Republican and an atheist even though Republicans are still very skeptic about certain women's and minority's rights?
You don't have to answer but I'd very interested in hearing what you have to say  Shy

Thank you for the welcome.

In response to your question I think that you certainly can. One doesn't have to be religious to think that abortion is immoral (all that is required is to think that a developing human (or foetus if you prefer to stick to latin words) is still human and therefore to destroy it would be murder). As for the rights of women and minorities, I'm not sure which rights you are referring to (apart from the 'right' to an abortion), but I wouldn't have said that republicanism entails scepticism towards the rights of those people(again, apart from the right to an abortion). Can you give some examples? (I live in the UK, so I identify more with stated Republican policy and philosophy, not as familiar with their actions in Congress)

Do you think abortion is always immoral?
What do you think about gay marriage and LGBT rights in general?

If you're from the UK, what do you think of Ukip? Huh

I hope I am not scaring you Tongue I'm just curious (:

Welcome to the forum.

The introduction subforum isn't the place to get into it, but feel free to start a thread on the prime mover argument so we can show you how it is incompatible with modern cosmology and quantum physics.Smile

Not scaring me at all, but thank you for the concern :p

Yes, abortion is always immoral, however there are occasions when it is less immoral than the alternative (for example if the woman's life is endangered) so I recognise that the law needs to make allowances for this.

I believe that civil partnerships are fine for anyone who wants them and they should be legally equal to marriage. I believe that nobody should get 'married' unless they are religious and who can get 'married' should be up to religions. If a church wishes to recognise gay marriage that is their business, although I would argue that it's theologically unsound from a Christian perspective. LGBT persons should have as many rights as can be reasonably afforded in a free society, same as anybody else. So gay adoption is fine, wishing to identify as another gender is fine, dressing non-traditionally is fine etc. I'm a libertarian.

I think that UKIP have a lot of policies that I find very agreeable and that they are often mis-represented by the main stream media as being racist (which the party is not, even if some members and former members arguably are). They are a step in the right direction, and a necessary step towards the collapse of Labour and the Conservatives but they are ultimately too populist and not libertarian enough for my taste.

Thanks for the welcome. I'll be sure to do that as I'll be interested to read your critique. Should that go in Religion, Philosophy or Science?

I don't think you'll find many allies here but welcome and good luck.

Thank you for the welcome and the luck. I hope I don't come across as a total ass-clown, even if my views are considered objectionable ;-)

I wouldn't be worried even if you do you come across as a total ass-clown. We get people coming to this site that make ass-clowns look downright pleasant.
