Read Genesis 3. It did not say the snake walk on his legs. It said the snake was cursed to crawl on its belly and eat dust.
The snakes legs could have helped augment his local motion through brush and trees. Which would keep him far from the type of life lived eating dust by being forced to spend most of the day on the ground
