The effects of early Europeans delivering disease far pre-dates 1776. Charles Mann, in 1491, indicates that the population of the Americas at the time Columbus arrived was in excess of 100 million but the illnesses spread along internal trade routes. Most Native-Americans sickened and died without ever seeing a European.
If you think about it, it makes sense that Pizarro with less that 200 men could not have overrun Peru and defeated the numbers he claimed to face unless there had been a little "softening-up" going on before.
America's genocide against Native-Americans took place centuries later.
