Problem is that you can't completely kill the brain and then bring that person back to report on what they saw. You can't switch a brain on and off. You can inhibit neurons to fire less and slow it down. Anything more than that means that you need to damage the neurons. What this means is that for any subjective experience during a NDE, there is always a more plausible explanation.
But it's quite easy to objectively test. If every operating theatre had a very tall cupboard and at the top of it was a specific number printed facing upwards to the ceiling, then any patient floating around would be able to see and tell the doctors, "Oh there's a number 73 on top of that cupboard".
