RE: Dad lets daughter die, rather than be touched by 'strange' rescuer

The only thing that makes sense to me is that the father was not aware of the amount of danger his daughter was in or else he would be jumping in himself rather than preoccupying himself with the actions of others. Someone so bound up in ideas of "honour" etc that they would rather their daughter die than be touched by rescuers, would surely not be letting her swim in a public beach in the first place (unless she was wearing a burka and it dragged her down).
