Clerk Defies Supreme Court, Refuses Gay Marriage Licenses

Jailing her just makes her a celebrity martyr for the “war on Christians”, just what her handlers want.  She is a pawn, a stupid pawn obviously but still, just a pawn.  Faux News alone will collect millions of dollars in ads while running endless, breathless stories about the gentle Christian lady / clerk sitting in a cell somewhere because of “her faith”.

I've heard this statement a lot regarding this saga, and it's very confusing to me: so we have to temper our justice system for fear of offending the people who will go out of their way to be offended no matter what is done, at this point?

There is no series of events that can happen, from this point on, that will not end in the fundie sect spinning a persecution narrative out of thin air to pin on Davis. She goes to jail, she's being jailed for her faith. She gets fined, she's being forced to pay for being a christian. Even if she gets acquitted, all the judges reverse the court orders and Davis is allowed not only to deny marriage certificates to gay people, but to literally fart in their faces if they try, it'll still become a cautionary tale about how increasing segments of the judicial system hate god, and Davis was only saved because of some good, god fearing judges, who are totally becoming an endangered species in this liberal, atheistic hell hole we call justice.

To say that you don't want her to become a martyr fundamentally misunderstands the nature of the groups supporting her. She's already a martyr. She became a martyr the moment she experienced any official pushback at all for trying to smuggle her bigotry into her work under a Jesus cloak. She said the magic Christ spell ("religious beliefs!") and she wasn't allowed to do absolutely whatever she wanted without criticism or resistance, and so she is being persecuted for her beliefs. That's just the way it goes for the fundies. Now it's just a matter of patiently waiting to see what sort of martyr she'll be, for them.

They had the label for her the moment they didn't get their way. Now they're just filling in the details.
