The current malaise in the Middle East is not the result of Western diplomacy, nor could diplomacy, the way Barnard envisions, have prevented what is currently going on. Wahhabism's influence began in the 18th century with it's marriage of convenience to the house of Saud.
Saudi Arabia and Turkey could easily wipe out Isis, but after several years have proven themselves to be reluctant. The only diplomacy that can serve those devastated by what's going on is to give Turkey and KSA an ultimatum: clean this shit up because if the West has to get involved we'll simply recolonize the region.
As if any part of the west has the stomach to think about recolonizing the region, much less to actually pay the price when the bill for the first installments come in.
Saudi Arabian monarchy is total incapable of surviving of direct confrontation with Sunni Jihadism. It only survived this far by appeasing jihadists whenever it can so as to make sure that toppling the monarchy is never the top most agenda item for the jihadists. Turkey is playing a double game precisely because Turkey has become aware it will never be fully accepted by the west, and in the post cold war world, it's only really hope for significance is to string the west along as long as it can, while it takes the opportunity to establish itself as the arbiter of power in the middle east, exploiting the antipathy the muslim east holds for the west. Turkey has no intention of being seen by the Jihadists as being pro-west.
BTW, the only reason why Turkey is "joining" in the "Fight" against ISIS is because it's "contribution" is a convenient cover for Turkey to bomb the Kurds. In the name of fighting ISIS, Turkey will do absolutely no fighting against ISIS, instead it would be using the opportunity to crush it's long time enemy the Kurds, who so happen to be actually fighting the ISIS.
