Yes. But it also was idiotic for people in the past (not just idiotic "in this day and age"). My mother was a very devout Southern Baptist fundamentalist (if you want to get the idea, visit this site, which is only a slight exaggeration). But she did not confuse ignorance with innocence. She wanted me to be abstinent, but she did not want me to be ignorant.
