Really, it's more that I'm trying to rebuild my life, and repair the psychological and emotional damage that was done by the cruelty of the Powers that Be as they used every dirty trick in their arsenal to try to "break" me into Confessing and then naming names (snitching, colloquially), which I refused to do... because 1) the charges were false, and 2) there were therefore no names to give them.

Addendum to translate: I come to AF as a way of socially interacting and employing my brain, without the stress of trying to interact (outside of my job) with people, which still tends to stress me out. Ironically, I find the company of African Americans easier to tolerate because they tend to be more aware of the issues faced by those who've been incarcerated, and when I have to explain about how I spent the last decade of my life, they just nod and tell me about their cousin/father/brother/bestie/self who spent a big chunk of time in the joint as well... whereas white people typically have on the blinders we've been discussing, so they tend to either press me for details I don't want to talk/think about or they get weird about it, often blown away (because I'm such a nice guy and don't "look/sound/act like a criminal", whatever that means) to the point they start revealing their ignorance and prejudice with "How could that have happened to YOU?" questions.

i hadn’t connected the 9 years you spent reading with the 9 years you spent in jail. I was just thinking there’s this really intelligent guy and I want him to know that I’m intelligent too and worth his time to talk to. Talking to you is like talking to my father or my cousin, sharing ideas.

And I understand how it is easier to deal with people at AF than face to face. With me it’s because I’m blind and hearing impaired. I love people but sometimes I just rather be alone.
