You do realize we have tons of illegal guns and a massive black market flooded with them that the UK and AU doesn't right? They come up from across the border and then straight into the hands of criminal gangs who sell and distribute them outside the scope of the law and background checks. Gun trafficking is HUGE here and really easy for arms smugglers via the US/Mexico border (easy to smuggle them into Mexico from wherever and super easy to smuggle them into the US from there). What we need is legislation to help weed out the mentally ill and get them treatment (involuntarily if need be) and better means of keeping known violent criminals in check, since those are the 2 populations contributing to the majority of gun deaths (and the 2 populations most likely to purchase ILLEGAL guns if we ban them). We also need to crack down on the illegal arms trade.
