 Yes, true society has a responsibility to recognize and help these people before they do harm, but who today really cares, today's society is more about self until something like this happens.

Many of us cotton to John Donne's verse:

No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manor of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I care, because each of these acts say something about my tolerance, my lassitude, my willingness to accept the unacceptable.

I get that you are making comment on society at large, and it is indeed a cruel and heartless beast. But it is no excuse.
