Opted not to go to college because we couldn't afford it. Husband worked his way up at his job and I figured out how to sell stuff on ebay (not that it's hard, but it's a good supplemental income) instead. We are fairly minimalistic, therefore have absolutely no consumer debt. We don't replace things unless they are broken beyond repair/usability. We save up to buy good quality items when we need to so it will last a long time. We do not go on vacation, out to fancy dinners, movies ect... We use reusable products and avoid single use or disposable products as much as possible. I make every meal, from scratch making healthy food very cheap. We keep a frugal, cash-only budget (do have an account in which we put enough to cover monthly bills out of our cash). We save 25% of our income minimum, more if we can (bonuses, tax refunds ect...). We spent 6 years sharing a single (older, used) car while saving for a second older, used car. Saved on both paying cash. We own both outright and keep them well maintained so both run fine, just aren't very fancy. We also utilize free or low cost forms of recreation like hiking, free community events, the local library ext... NO drinking or drugs. People would be surprised at how much shit they spend money on that is 100% unnecessary.
Honestly, I'm perfectly satisfied living with less. Makes you appreciate what you have even more. I'd rather not have the luxuries others consider "essential" if it means not being in debt and having a growing savings. My generation (millennial) is seriously going to be fucked if they keep digging deeper holes for themselves with this consumeristic, disposable, trend-based culture. The only debt I ever foresee taking on is a home, but thats basically just taking what we pay for rent anyways and transferring it over to paying on something we will eventually own. We should have enough in our "house fund" by this time next year we'll be able to put a down payment on a modest home.
