Religion is simply a reaffirmation of this belief from peers. Organized Religion isn't an indoctrination into God, it's an indoctrination into the fear of arguing against people who share your same belief - resulting in a belief in god because of lack in individual thinking and a misguided indoctrinated virtue of "accepting" what people tell you is true, as the truth complimented with an ingrained fear of exploring opposition based on the organized religious values you were coaxed into from people with the same common misguided fear.
You could probably sum up the answer to OP's the question right here. Really, it's all about appeasing a negative emotion (fear). Not only to grant comfort but also to give false confidence in the wake of the innumerable things that happen to be out of ones control.
