If you have a PC or MAC, Zdoom is the way to go. All you need are the WAD files and Zdoom and it's the best source port out there IMO, very pure and close to the original but also slightly upgraded without going too far. I prefer it to GZdoom with the extra graphical improvement. Zdoom is easy, intutitive and the perfect balance for me.
No Dosbox required just pure smooth awesomeness.
