I'm not sure if celebrate is the right word, it's just an arbitrary time of year to have some merriment, decorations, presents and special yum-yums.
I don't think it's hypocritical at all. If you were thanking baby Jesus or something, I would call that more insane than hypocritical, especially for an atheist
