I only significantly disagree with the principle number 1. I live in a family where politeness is valued highly, but I don't like being nice to people who treat me poorly.

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you
