I'm having a hard time seeing this as an issue. English words, almost all of them, have different meanings and shades of meanings. If you feel 'spiritual' about your mum, your pets, a particular sunset, etc, I don't think anyone is accusing you of defending woo. Although I'm some 12000 miles from there, I feel a 'spiritual' connection to the land of my birth. There may be no 'need' to use the word 'spiritual' to describe what I feel, but I really don't see the harm in it.
