I think well thought immigration with legal restrictions and requirements is perfectly fine. I also think countries should seek to attract specific kinds of people depending on their needs - I.E. If you already have high unemployment rates on low paid jobs, it's irrational to bring many low-skilled immigrants in, it's bad for both immigrants and national citizens because both will lose. I also think it's ok to be humanist towards people as long as that doesn't lead you to compromise the well being of people already living in the country.
