It's all a matter of timing. When we got into both world wars, the tide turned. Coincidence? Perhaps but it fits well with our egotistical hero complex, coming in to save the day just in the nick of time. It's the kind of stuff that looks good in the movies, you know.
I can just see either Wilson or FDR just watching the conflicts mumbling "not yet... not yet... not yet..."
