It's not really irrelevant. Criminals obtain illegal guns quite a bit. It's not particularly difficult.
Yes they do, a guy locally where I lived was caught with 7,000 guns. Him stealing them still means that the volume of guns is problematic. You cant simply say "I wouldn't do that" or "don't blame responsible gun owners" ...... He got all those guns because of the volume of opportunity to get them.
In a utopia if we didn't have the amount of gun death, or even gun theft, nobody would be complaining. But it is a problem both legal and illegal. It is ultimately a volume issue and ease of access issue.
