Of course there's a reason. I don't believe those reasons will be set aside simply because the latest batch of Westerners are wearing jeans instead of battle garb, myself; and I don't think that civilians can engage the public from afar, using blogs or op-eds. Part of war is dehumanizing the enemy, and part of peace-making is seeing them once again as humans. How the latter can be accomplished without human contact is beyond me.
