Episode VII (spoilers)

One of the thing I absolutely love about Abram's movies is his ability to update the original look and tech from an original series or movie like star trek/wars and make what was hokey look more modern and believable. It was all the little things he up dated like the falcon's gunnery scope display screen, or the way the tie fighter manipulated their gunnery controls, it was all the same and when you looked at what the gunner saw you saw a believable display that paid much respect to what lucas originally did.

One of the other things I really liked was the light saber effect kylo Ren had with his saber. for those who don't know Ren has taken his look from the knights of ren which is a much much older sith group. their technology was not as advanced so the light saber blade is far more destructive and crude. In the movie you can see this with the effect of how light is bent/reacts around the energy blade.

In the books Han's son was the male twin (Jacen) and the female (luke supposed daughter in the movie) was the female twin (Jaina) of solo and Leigha. (one repersented the light side and the other dark) The Idea for ren came out of the 'diluted' blood line (Anikin/Vader being a pure force bred child, then Luke leigha being 1/2, and Ben solo and his sister being 1/4. In the book Jacen solo becomes a sith lord later in life while 'ben' turns to the dark side much earilier in training, before he knows who who/what he really is. So he collects sith lord artifacts to make himself out to be far more powerful than what he really is.

None of this is mentioned outright in the movie but the arch of the character supports this conclusion, which is yet another example of the sheer love and respect for this story JJ put into this movie.
