Just last night there was a special on History International about the evolution of Hell ( yes, G-C, Hell evolved....just as all life did). One of the main points was that there was surprisingly little written in any of the Holy Horseshit about what Hell was like. Most of the later bullshit evolved from stories that xtians told to scare the shit out of themselves and others in the Dark and Middle Ages. Obviously, in the case of people like G-C it worked like a charm.
But actual descriptions of Hell are rare.
