Sure it's better, but it still isn't very good unless you have comprehensive studies on the population. Like maybe opinion polls, crime statistics, and that sort of thing. So many times phrases like 'I live with them and they're nice' are used as rebuttals to studies.
Also, I don't know about you, but I tend not to have any deep moral conversations with people I don't know very well. I also don't talk to that many people about these sorts of things. A murderer can sell me a sandwich and be perfectly cordial; that doesn't mean he's not a murderer.
