Would you simply go "Ok, sure"?
Many humans HAVE and do join clubs just to fit in, and yes, it can create a "happiness", but when they do that most of the time it is just to fit in, it isn't based on any real sense of self. The type of "happiness" his well intended church goers and he falls for, is about placating the church, not basing it on any pragmatic understanding of human behavior.
No.
And you're assuming that all us Catholics who choose to live by Church teaching do so only because we were told and that we're just blindly following. Perhaps that is true for some people, and I can't speak for everyone. But it certainly isn't true for me, and I certainly wouldn't assume that people are just "blindly following" every time they disagree with me on something.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."
