I think organized religion encourages some good deeds by providing an opportunity and a bit of peer... encouragement to donate and do stuff. Other organizations or forms of community achieve the same effect (school / parent organized blood drives come to mind for example) but church congregations are both very ubiquitous, and form an easily identifiable category.
