Yea, but that is an unfortunate part of our messy reality. Forming a group does not depend on scientific fact, so all you need is enough people buying and selling a crappy claim, they end up defaulting to the intellectual laziness because that is more comforting to them.
The ancient Egyptians were successful for 3,000 years and did so based on the completely false claim that the sun had a deity controlling it. But enough people bought it and that false belief created groups that lead to their long existence.
But yea, our anger is justified now because we have a much better understanding of scientific reality.
