Frankly the whole story sounds like horseshit. For one thing, there is no indication anywhere...other than in the fucking gospels...of a prisoner release on Passover. Crucifixion was reserved for slaves and rebels. Common criminals were executed in the arena. The notion that a Roman governor would release a dangerous rebel because a mob asked for it is absurd. The notion that anyone would give a shit about a slave one way or the other is even more absurd.
Slaves and rebels did not get "trials"...they were simply nailed up. I always laugh my ass off when someone claims that the Jewish rebels on Masada committed suicide to avoid "slavery." Slavery was the least of their impending problems.
