Which is a pretty recent development. Having happened during my lifetime. As I said, they can't do away with it, so they say not to put too much stock in it. Because they actually read it.
But even when I entered primary school, we were encouraged to believe in the OT. And to consider it and it's protagonists to be exemplary. The Second Vaticanum was very slow moving to reach outlying communities. Which is but one reason, why I don't subscribe to obejctive morality.
