Remeber how the Passion of the Christ went down. There were the usual suspects cheering it on and the rest calling it a bigoted splatter movie. Do you think, shit like that is bound to convernt anyone not already being firmly in that camp?
Look, this really isn't any different with real religion than it is with Coke Vs Pepsi or Ford vs Chevy. Most of the time people stay put in their respective camps. So the marketing isn't for them outside maintaining their attention as a reminder, but like any business religion is no different, it wont grow if it doesn't expand it's base.
Even then in religion worldwide there are tons of people who leave one religion for another, or drop it altogether. But yea, I remember the hype of that movie, it was obnoxious.
But see here is the thing, it is worth the long term skepticism, because we know from history that social norms, while they can be slow to change, have changed. If we never questioned social norms our species never would have left the caves.
