That emboldened part is the active ingredient to the meaning. Viz:

do something in such a way as to emphasize that one clearly regards it as below one's dignity or level of importance.
"he condescended to see me at my hotel"
While it does carry the meaning of descent, it's not a physical change of elevation but a lowering of one's sense of superiority.
