Rape is not just about power and control. It came about by evolution for reproductive reasons.
Came about by evolution? Maybe, I can understand that rape to sentient beings is just normal reproductive behavior amongst species who have no notion of consent, instincts drive them to mate whenever the circumstances permit, but to say that rape as an intentional violation of consent came about through natural selection is something different and can't be inferred from non-consensual mating amongst beings without the same cognitive processes counting towards consent and/or mutual gain.
My dog seems to have a notion of consent, as her twisting right around and biting most male dogs mounting her seems to suggest

Successful and lucky genes are passed on. It makes sense that rape would be more likely to succeed than not having sex at all. Hence: driven by evolution. While rape isn't likely intentional in violating consent, it is always intentional in fucking something. If indeed 'consent' doesn't exist for most lifeforms, then it makes sense that 'rape' (which is usually unconcerned with consent) is deeply embedded in our genes, simply absent the social constructs that regard sex without consent negatively.

Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day
