I once heard a Catholic Priest start an epiphany (Visit of the Magi) homily by saying "You know there were no wise men, right? No visit from gift-bearing Kings or prophets or whatever they were supposed to have been." He then launched into a great explanation of how the writer of Matthew wanted to use this image to show divinity. I wanted to hug him. My fundamentalist parents would have been outraged at that statement. Yes, the Catholics are not nearly as literal-minded.
