Hitting a child is never appropriate. Children learn what they live. If you hit a child, you teach them to hit. If your child is acting up so much that you have to resort to spanking, then you've already failed as a parent. And once you resort to hitting a child, you start to fail as a person. If you hit a child in anger, then you've really failed as a human being. Because you've resorted to using violence on someone smaller than you to get them to act the way you want them to instead of teaching them to act the appropriate way. This would not be appropriate with another adult, so why would it EVER be appropriate with a child?
You want to talk about the Bible? You mean the same book that says if your child is rebellious you are to stone them to death? Yeah, what a wonderful example to set for people to follow. When god's children act up, he drowns them. What a great example. Personally I take it as an example of what NOT to do.
Parents need to be more than just the ones with the might. They have to set an example for their children. Because that's how kids learn best. From example. My husband and I dole out alternative punishments. We make sure that our kids learn the lesson. They almost always do.

The whole tone of Church teaching in regard to woman is, to the last degree, contemptuous and degrading. - Elizabeth Cady Stanton
