While I agree that "deism" is not nearly as dangerous or crazy as theism, I still think it is an irrational position to take.
Basically, what deists are saying is that some supernatural being or force which most people call "god" must have put the universe into motion which led to our existence. Just like theism, the deist point of view is not based on evidence but assumptions and very weak ones at that.
Heck, I can claim that pixie fairies created the universe while riding magical unicorns but then they disappeared never to be seen again and my claim would be no different than the deist claim. There is no rational or good reason to take the deist point of view.
