Our dog, a rescue, shows clear signs of trauma too. She was less than one year old when we adopted her, but she still displays multiple symptoms of it at the age of nearly 7. It's clear she has been beaten, and she's seen people beaten too. It's so sad. She's a lot more confident now, but when we first got her, she would just roll over and submit meekly all the time.

We once had a shelter dog that was in a lab previously. Deaf, we only learned that later, and fundamentally frightened. She bit me a few times, but I went to the ER to get stitches and a shot and carried on. We took her in to give her love, not to abuse her any further. And ultimately it paid off.
