I don't understand your point properly. What do you mean by "little more oomph". Do we at least agree that the university shouldn't be investigating crimes?

Innocent until proven guilty is extremely relevant when a student is judged by the university to be guilty of a crime (and then suspended) before they are actually proven guilty in a court of law.

Proving guilt isn't something an investigation does though, it's something the courts do. As far as I'm aware, the courts were never involved in this, so presumption of innocence should have been intact.
My point is, this university performed an investigation themselves over a criminal activity, something which they should have no jurisdiction over whatsoever, and based their decision on that investigation, rather than the ruling of any actual court of law. That should be illegal, not encouraged.
