You should work to make yourself happy, first. Always. This is not in a selfish way.
If you are not happy with yourself, you will NEVER be happy with your partner, child, parent, or any other relationship.
Also, if either you or your spouse thinks they can only be happy if they have wealth and more stuff, then neither of you will EVER be actually happy.
I realize this is a bit off the topic of men vs women, but I have long since learned that my husband is not responsible for my happiness. Nor is my child, nor my parents. That's on me, and although having enough money to be comfortable is helpful, having more than that won't make me happier.
