It's the power. Power does weird things to people. Power corrupts and all that, but it is very much rooted in reality. The Greeks had it right with their gods. The Greek gods were powerful and they were unstoppable with what they did to humanity at a whim.
The Christians also described their god in their image as well. Take a look around us, what is happening and what has happened. Ever since monotheism took hold, the gods only become crueler, only because man becomes crueler. And man is the creator of god.
