In my experience, it is a term far, far more often applied on others by those who have an axe to grind about certain issues, most notably feminism. Its most common use is as a pejorative term against other people. I can only imagine that those who may apply the term to themselves are either naive or are making an effort to reappropriate the term.
Keep in mind, I'm no fan of people who think getting offended is a heinous crime, where people must be offered safe places from words and other such nonsense.
But the term 'SJW' tends to be used in order to simply dismiss different points of view. And that's my issue with the term. People who attempt to portray themselves as being intelligent can do better than snidely use a term that's part of an internet troll's arsenal.
