I was on the verge of going there while I was in Malaysia and I just read of too many violent crimes in the newspaper and decided not to go.
The one that broke the camel's back was the report that a motorcyclist had ridden past a bus stop and decapitated two young girls.
Also, while in Borneo, there were quite a few places like Sandakan where the locals would warn you not to go to isolated beaches because you could be kidnapped by Philipino pirates.
