In my experience, Windows 10 is miles better than Windows 8. Other people's milage varies wildly.

I went straight from 7 to 10. 10 doesn't cause any problems so far. Caveat though and a recommendation to everyone updating. Make a hard dvd copy of your current system before updating and make a copy of win 10 after updating. Both is possible, even if your rig came with a preinstalled system. You only need a small app to read out your serial number.

In the case of 10, the updater installs a hidden dvd image anyway. I have forgotten what steps are necessary to convert that image format to ISO, so it can work as a startup disk. But you find tons about it when doing a google.
