What I've found is that there are 2 basic types of atheists:
1) Simply don't believe in god, but don't mind if others do
2) Don't believe in god because they think it's a dangerous fairytale
I am in the second group. My hunch is that people in the first group can still be friends with believers.
As a type-oner I have no in-principle reason to reject a theist as a friend. I consider Catholic-Lady a friend. I was also fond of Fr0d0 and am fond of the board's curmudgeonly Swedenborgian. But in RL I find myself more often buddying up with atheists, except in the world of plants and gardens. I assiduously avoid finding out what their religious standing may be since that has no relation to my interest in them and may well interfere with enjoying what I do value in them. It just ain't that big a thang.
