In my experience, it is a term far, far more often applied on others by those who have an axe to grind about certain issues, most notably feminism. Its most common use is as a pejorative term against other people. I can only imagine that those who may apply the term to themselves are either naive or are making an effort to reappropriate the term.
Keep in mind, I'm no fan of people who think getting offended is a heinous crime, where people must be offered safe places from words and other such nonsense.
But the term 'SJW' tends to be used in order to simply dismiss different points of view. And that's my issue with the term. People who attempt to portray themselves as being intelligent can do better than snidely use a term that's part of an internet troll's arsenal.
1) There is a legitimate ax to grind with 3rd wave feminists and modern SJW's though. So that is trying to fix the issue by addressing them.
2) SJW isn't a completely bad term, there are social injustices, but not nearly as many or as far reaching as these people seem to think. What with Black Lives Matter, Safe Spaces, etc. It's a movement that started off with good intentions and ate itself, just like Occupy Wall Street, which I was a part of, and saw SJW's and whiny college kids come and ruin it with their immature child-like tactics.
3) I agree with you that SJW can shut down conversations, but with nuance and explanation, I think SJW's and Non-SJW's or people in the middle can have a dialogue. I have no problem with identifying with some social justice movements, like gay rights but think it can be taken too far when they try to take away people's jobs if they disagree. The modern SJW to me has a few characteristics. A) Anti-free speech, B) Anti-debate, C) Anti-white, D) Pro-discrimination of groups they don't like, E) Anti-cop, F) Anti-discourse, G) Anti-man and a few other things. But if the SJW doesn't practice or preach any of that I don't mind them much.
If the hypothetical idea of an afterlife means more to you than the objectively true reality we all share, then you deserve no respect.
