Sooner then I would have thought. In Washington we have the death penalty on the books still, but haven't used it in ages, since 1994 when we hung someone which was the last person hung in the United States. We didn't even execute the green river killer.
Washington is the only state with an active gallows although I think it's unlikely that there will be any more executions in Washington, despite the law being on the books.
