It's so complex that drawing causation from correlation is a very tricky thing. I find it extremely hard to believe that "being part of a religion" could directly cause any actual change. By what mechanism is this happening? If someone says they are a christian, they are a christian. So what? There's way too many factors involved, not least of which the fact that most of the world is religious and often takes it out on the non-religious. And then you have people pretending to be religious so as not to be persecuted, so that messes it all up.
And it's all entirely moot, because you can't make yourself believe things. You could pretend to believe and declare yourself a christian/muslim/whatever; but if someone's going to tell me that is good for you (except to avoid persecution), I'd question their sanity.
